March 6 has been declared the ‘European Day of Remembrance for the Righteous’

Prague, 24 May 2012 – The European Parliament has designated March 6 as the European Day of Remembrance for the Righteous. The written declaration was supported by 388 Members of the European Parliament. Now all of Europe will on this day commemorate all those righteous individuals who risked their lives and the safety of themselves and their families to stand up for the dignity and freedom of victims of totalitarian regimes.

In support of this appeal, on 8 February 2012 the civic initiative Art for Public and the Italian organisation Gariwo held a press conference in the Municipal House in Prague called ‘The Legacy of Václav Havel, Charta 77 and the European Day of Remembrance for the Righteous’, the objective of which was to inform the public about the initiative.

There were several speakers at the conference: Milan Horáček, a Czech-German politician and former Member of the European Parliament, Daniel Kroupa, philosopher and signatory of Charter 77, Pavel Bratinka, also a signatory of Charter 77, and Gabriele Nissim, an Italian journalist and novelist and founder of the initiative.

Gabriele Nissim presented in Prague for the first time a previously undisclosed documentary about Václav Havel and Charter 77 titled ‘Young Anti-politicians’, which he himself filmed secretly in 1986 on a visit to Prague.

The Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation VISION 97 and the Library of Václav Havel assumed auspices over the event.

‘The adoption of the written declaration no. 3/2012 proposed by GARIWO marks a historical milestone, because it is the first declaration from the European Parliament on combatting genocide’, commented Gabriele Nissim on the significance of the moment. Monika Burian Jourdan, chair of the civic association ART FOR PUBLIC, also expressed her pleasure at the success of the initiative: ‘This is a very fundamental project, which exactly meets the vision of our organisation, to bring the arts and culture to the people in the widest possible sense.’ Andreas Pieralli, project manager of the Czech conference, made a similar comment, noting the political dimension for the Czech Republic: ‘I’m proud to have the opportunity to contribute to this commendable project. I think that the experience of Gabriel Nissim, who in Prague in 1986 met with people around Charter 77, who (often travelling far to do so) met together to talk, is an important legacy even for today’s complex political situation.’

The declaration of the European Day of Remembrance for the Righteous is an important step towards promoting basic human rights and defending human freedoms and dignity. Overcoming such obstacles as the unwillingness of some politicians to assign a universal dimension to the Holocaust, recognise the Armenian genocide, or compare Nazi concentration camps with Communist gulags, the European Parliament helps direct the focus towards dialogue and mutual respect as essential devices for solving today’s cultural and political crises.
